Before knowing the fun ways of developing speed reading, let’s know who developed this concept. It was MRS. EVELYN WOOD who dwelled upon the idea of speed reading in 1959. She was impressed by the reading speed of her professor and set to observe and develop techniques to read speedily.
What Is Speed Reading?
Speed reading is a technique that aims to enhance the speed of catching the CONTENT, along with its MEANING.
In today’s world, where there is heaps of information to be read, either from the paper or from your computer screen, it is important that you concentrate in increasing your speed of reading. Speed-reading will help you complete your work faster and leave enough time for leisure too.
Starting Your Speed Reading Practice
Pick a THIN book, not more than 300 pages. The book should contain interesting stuff. This will help to gain faster results. Remember; begin the practice only when you feel to do so. Don’t force yourself because it’s of no use. The best time to practice speed reading is when you are in a cheerful mood, say in the morning or at leisure time.
Choose a comfortable and quiet place of your home. Now, holding the book in your hands, begin to read DOWN THE LINES, not from side to side of the page. Grasp a GROUP OF WORDS or one phrase at a time. Do not focus on each word separately. And please do NOT re-read, even if you are tempted to (which you will at the initial stages).
You don’t have to spare long hours to practice speed reading. Just 15 -20 minutes a day, will do the trick. Once you are regular in your practice, you will find that your speed of reading has doubled, even tripled!
Making Speed Reading Enjoyable
Why not make your speed reading exercise a family activity? Include your kids and your spouse too. Arrange a competition. It is sheer fun! Each one of you reads a portion of the book after setting a timer. The target is to read as many pages as you can in the set time limit. The one who reads the most number of pages gets a prize!
Remember, honing your reading skills and developing speed reading has no age bar. So, call your grandparents too! Have a family gathering and at the same time develop a skill! You cannot force anybody to practice sped reading. It is a matter of will. And the more willing a person is, the faster he or she will get the results.
So, get going!
